Wow, wow, wow! This is a belter of a Chianti at the value end of the market. In reviewing this wine for the list, I was sceptical but it knocked me off my feet. Fabulous red fruit flavours, with hints of undergrowth & leather spice... could not fault it within the sub-$20 price point.
Monteguelfo is from the estates of the Cecchi family who have been making wine in Castellina, Chianti since 1893. For generations they have built up vineyard holdings in some of Tuscany's great sites, allowing them to produce some spectacular wines at great value. This wine is made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, and does not see any oak, making it a vibrant, fresh expression of Sangiovese with hints of black forest fruits, woodland berries, saddle leather and victoria plum. Perfectly matched to antipasto or a classic capricciosa pizza.
